Using AI to design a smart medical device

DESIGN CHALLENGE
Artificial Feedback t is a strategic AI design project for a medical device company, Ostomedic Health, which was looking to expand its product line to include smart device products. The company was specifically considering the development of a new smart base plate that could provide a better experience to ostomy bag users through improved feedback and real-time information on their mobile devices. Ostomedic Health was interested in evaluating the desirability of a smart base plate ostomy product and learning new AI-based methods that they could leverage for future research and development.

  • Identify most important product features for ostomy bag users
  • Design new product concepts which are likely to succeed in the existing market
  • Develop AI-based methods which can be used for future R&D projects

Market research

AI-based sentiment analysis highlighted social aspects and hardware problems as market opportunities for the product.

INSIGHTS

  • The most commonly used nontrivial keywords (“change”, “visible”, “wear”) refer to pouch changes and visibility.
  • Keyword topics cluster around emotional wellbeing, lifestyle & activities, and fashion & style, pointing to the importance of social factors in ostomy sentiment.
  • Hardware problems (pouches, leakage, attachments) and social aspects (pouch visibility, daily impacts, awareness) are the two primary drivers of negative sentiment.
  • No mention of smart bags or sensor-based bags in news or social mentions in the last year. 
  • The most influential contributors (influencers) on the topic focus primarily on daily life with an ostomy bag.




Generative AI

AI was used to generate product concepts, prototypes, and instant consumer feedback to evaluate market viability for new product concepts.

GENERATING PRODUCT CONCEPTS

Based on market considerations, I used ChatGPT to generate new ostomy product concepts. 








AI CONSUMER FEEDBACK

Using 10,000 actual ostomy bag reviews from Amazon.com, I tested product concepts with an AI ostomy consumer audience and compared potential products.

KEY PRODUCT CONSIDERATIONS
  • Patient frustrations and market trends indicate likely product success with a smart plate ostomy bag. 
  • A trustworthy, user-friendly app is essential to smart sensor product success. 
  • Discrete bag design would significantly increase the likelihood of product success given that few products in the market successfully address this patient concern. 
  • AI-generated user feedback indicated ultra-thin ostomy bag design outperforms the smart sensor solution in desirability analysis.
